Nail Builder FAQs
What is builder gel for nails?
Builder gel is a high-viscosity nail gel used to create strength, length and thickness. Most modern nail builder gel products use a brush-on formula that applies in a similar way to traditional gel polish; however, it tends to be a lot thicker to add that much-needed strength.
What are the benefits of builder gel?
Builder gel nails are a great choice for clients with weaker nails, prone to breakage. The strengthening formula helps to protect against breakage, splitting and chipping. It also promotes growth, so it’s fantastic for those clients looking to add length to their natural nails. What’s more, most nail builder is also self-levelling, meaning application is speedier and you won’t need to spend as long refining the shape.
How long does builder gel last?
Builder gel extensions tend to last approximately 2-3 weeks depending on the brand, application, and aftercare. The thicker formula makes it less likely to lift than other gel enhancements, so clients can enjoy stunning nails for longer. Builder gel nails can also be infilled like you would a gel or acrylic nail extension to increase the life of your enhancements.

Do you need a base coat with builder gel?
It depends which brand you’re using, but most professional builder gels will require a base coat to be applied first. You often don’t need a specific builder base coat – a classic gel polish base coat will do the job. Just make sure it’s cured properly under a UV or LED nail lamp before going in with your nail builder.
Can you put gel polish over builder gel?
Absolutely! One of the things we love most about this system is that you can stick with natural builder gel nails, or finish off with gel polish colours or nail art. These days, there are plenty of coloured builder gels available which lend themselves to that clean girl aesthetic, but can also really help those nail designs pop.
Can you use builder gel on natural nails?
Yes! Because gel builder for nails is a superb strengthener, it’s great for use on natural nails. That said, the thick viscosity makes it super versatile, and you may wish to use it to build and sculpt using forms or nail tips as well. The world is your oyster when it comes to nail gel builder!
Does builder gel damage nails?
As with any nail system, damage can occur to the natural nails if correct application and builder gel removal isn’t followed. So it’s important that you follow the brand’s guide to a T to give your clients the best, damage-free builder gel set.

And with that in mind, let’s check out how to apply and remove Halo EasiBuild gel
Halo EasiBuild Application and Removal
How to apply builder gel in a bottle
Preparation
- Prep the nails by gently pushing back the cuticles and trimming away any non-living tissue.
- File with a 180 grit nail file and gently etch the nail’s surface to remove any shine.
- Remove dust and cleanse with the Halo Prep & Scrub.
- If using nail tips, apply here.
Application
- Apply Halo Base Coat and cure for 30 seconds under the Halo LED Smart Nail Lamp.
- Brush on a slick layer of EasiBuild builder gel. Don’t cure this layer – instead, it’s used to guide the building layer into the correct place on the nail bed.
- Now apply another coat of builder gel directly onto the slick layer, concentrating on the apex and structure. If the product begins to flatten, hold the hand upside down for a few seconds to regain the apex. Cure for 30 seconds.
- Repeat the above step if you haven’t achieved the desired apex.
- Remove the tacky residue with a lint-free nail wipe.
Finishing
- Use a 180 grit nail file to refine the shape, length and surface of your builder gel set.
- Buff the nails with a Halo buffing block to smooth the nail surface.
- Brush away the dust and cleanse with Prep & Wipe.
- If adding gel polish, apply another layer of base coat, your Halo gel polish colour, and top coat, curing each for 30 seconds. Although base coat isn’t essential here, Pure Nails recommend using it to make colour application easier. If you’re not using colour, simply go ahead and apply your top coat and cure.
- Wait for the nails to cool and apply Halo Citrus Crush Cuticle Oil to nourish the nails and cuticles.
How to remove builder gel
- Remove the bulk of your nail builder with a 180 grit file until you nearly reach the base.
- Either soak the remainder off in a bowl of acetone, or soak cotton pads in acetone and wrap around each finger, enclosing in aluminium foil. Leave for around 10 minutes, or until all the builder gel and base has lifted from the nails.
- File the natural nails using a 180 grit file and gently buff away any residue.
- Apply a drop of Halo cuticle oil to each nail and gently massage in.
