The best winter skincare tips for healthy winter skin

Hand on heart, we can say that we love winter! It’s the season of chunky knitwear, mulled wine, and sparkling festive lights. But it’s also the time when we often notice the most changes in our skin. Healthy and glowing one day, dry, irritated, and dull the next, winter skin can be unpredictable and uncomfortable. In fact, many clients notice a complete change in their skin type during the colder months which can make winter skincare a real issue.

But what causes these changes? Put simply, it’s all about temperature. As the temperature drops and harsh gusts begin to blow, humidity levels fall and cause dry skin in winter. Combine that with hot showers and indoor central heating, and there’s really no break for dry skin. Even if clients normally have combination or oily skin, they can still be affected by these changes in temperature. Dryness, redness, tightness, flaking, and itchy skin in winter are common for all skin types.

Winter Skincare Tips

We know what you’re thinking. If winter dry skin is caused by the temperature, how do we tackle the effects? We’re sure moving to sunnier climes every winter isn’t feasible for many, so knowing what is good for skin in winter is the best way to maintain healthy, hydrated skin. Here are some of our top winter skincare tips to help your clients combat common winter skin problems:

  • Be gentle to the skin. The last thing dry, itchy or sore skin needs is further irritation. Delicate cleansers and moisturisers will help to restore skin’s natural oils and lock in moisture.
  • Likewise, avoid products with harsh ingredients. Steer clear of alcohol-based cleansers and soaps in favour of kinder, more natural skincare products.
  • Dial down exfoliation. It can be tempting to buff away those dry patches, but using an abrasive exfoliant can make matters worse. Swap your scrub for an AHA or BHA product which gently exfoliates without stripping the skin.
  • Tone down the heating. We know it’s chilly out, but having a break from blasting the central heating can help to prevent over-drying the skin.
  • Avoid too-hot water. We all love a long, hot soak during the colder months, but whiling away hours in the bubbles can strip away the skin’s natural oils. Try to keep baths and showers shorter, and don’t have the water too hot.
  • Don’t neglect the SPF. Many clients think SPF is just for summer, but sunscreen is just as important in the winter months. Protecting against UV damage will keep the skin barrier strong and healthy.

Winter Skincare Routine

So what does all this mean for maintaining a healthy skincare routine in winter? For many, the best skincare for the winter season involves making small tweaks to existing beauty regimes. You don’t need a complete overhaul – just swapping out a few skincare products can really help to soothe stressed and dehydrated skin.

Cleanse

Getting the first step right is essential. If clients are suffering from dry skin during winter, selecting a moisturising cleanser will help them start out strong on the road to hydrated skin. If irritation is the issue, then the gentler the better. Recommend switching to a cleanser for sensitive skin like the MONU Delicate Facial Wash – perfect for softly cleansing while comforting and soothing the complexion.

Moisturise

You guessed it: a good moisturiser is often the key to keep skin hydrated. Winter skin demands richer skincare, so swap your light moisturiser for richer cream to really get that hydration fix. Using a thicker formulation on dry, dehydrated or sensitive skin can help to prevent flare-ups and lock in that essential moisture.

Eye Cream

During the winter, the delicate skin around our eyes can become dry or sore. Soothe dry under-eyes with a calming eye treatment. Go with a rich cream like the MONU Collagen Eye Cream for rebalancing and plumping, or a lighter texture like the Cooling Eye Gel for lightweight soothing. Or if eyes need an instant refresh, treat them to a +maskology Under Eye Mask – infused with Retinol and Vitamin C to hydrate and brighten.

Facial Serums

Winter is a great time to layer skincare with hydrating facial serums. Used before moisturisers, serums help to boost and lock in your clients’ skincare goodness. Opting for a rich serum like the Kaeso Luxe Facial Serum helps to replenish lost moisture and even the skin tone – great for adding to your winter skincare essentials.

Face Masks

One of our top tips to take care of skin in winter is to introduce a face mask. Using an intensive treatment 1-3 times a week can help to regulate the skin’s natural moisture levels and improve the skin’s barrier. Whether clients opt for a lightweight face sheet mask, a restorative overnight face mask, or a nourishing treatment like the MONU Hydrating Mask, this is a step we would recommend clients put into practice now.
