What is PPD in hair dye?
Clients these days are pretty clued up on industry buzzwords, and since the Covid 19 pandemic, there’s been more and more visibility surrounding allergies, skin tests, and potentially harmful ingredients. One of those ingredients is Paraphenylenediamine, better known as PPD.
Although not harmful by definition, PPD is the main ingredient in many permanent and some semi-permanent hair dyes that triggers allergic reactions. Allergies to PPD can span from mild reactions such as rashes and redness to more severe reactions including blistering and swelling. It is, of course, safe to use hair colours which contain PPD, but for clients who have experienced reactions to colour or skin testing, offering a hair dye without PPD is essential. It’s important to remember that allergies can arise at any time and from any colour, so you must perform a patch test on clients before ALL hair colouring services.
