How to care for curly hair with new OSMO Curl Revival

More and more clients are opting to embrace their natural look. From clean girl nails to ‘no-make-up’ make-up, fresh and natural beauty is very much on the rise. This trend appears to be going nowhere, and has even made its way into the hair industry. With new concepts like the ‘skinification of hair‘ comes a growing desire to understand how to care for our hair’s unique needs. And as anyone with curly hair knows, the needs of curls, coils and waves can be quite a lot to handle!

While there’s no biological difference between curly hair and straight hair, curls are much more prone to dryness, breakage, and frizz. Plus, when we consider hair’s porosity, curl pattern, and the fact that many clients will have a variety of curls, it’s no wonder that figuring out how to care for curly hair can be a bit of a minefield! That’s why finding a bespoke curly hair care routine is so important.

The Curly Girl Method

When Lorraine Massey introduced the world to ‘The Curly Girl Method‘ in 2001, curly-haired folk everywhere rejoiced! But what is the Curly Girl Method? Let’s take a look…

Essentially, this hair care method avoids the common damaging habits associated with many traditional curly hair products. Massey advocates banishing sulphates, silicones, heat-styling and brushing in favour of a conditioning, curl enhancing shampoo and natural styling. The aim of this specialised curl method is to treat naturally curly, wavy and coily hair gently to accentuate the curl pattern and avoid damaging the hair cuticle.

Since Massey enlightened us all, countless individuals, salons, and product innovators have made the switch to this curly hair care routine, with a whole host of approved Curly Girl Method products now available on the UK and global market.

Caring for curly hair

Building the right routine for your clients relies on an understanding of each hair type and its individual needs. Follow the below guide to ensure you select the best curly hair care products for every client.

  • identify the curl type
  • analyse the curl condition
  • choose the hair goal
  • personalise the routine

Let’s look at these a little more closely…

Types of curls

Each of these OSMO Curly Girl Method approved products can be used on the 3 main types of curl. These are:

Type 2 Hair – Waves
Positioned between straight and curly, wavy hair can be defined by its looser loops and S-shaped waves. Type 2 hair can easily lose its shape and become frizzy and unruly.

Type 3 Hair – Curls
Curly hair has a more distinct pattern formation that ranges from loose curls to O-shaped curls and corkscrews. Type 3 curls are particularly prone to frizz and breakage.

Type 4 Hair – Coils
Coily hair has the tightest curl pattern and can be recognised either by its Z-shaped angle or tight coils starting at the root. Coils are also referred to as kinky or Afro hair. These tight coils are prone to major shrinkage and can also become very dry, coarse, wiry or spongy in texture.

Curl conditions

Once you’ve identified your client’s curl type, its time to assess the condition. Healthy curls are dependent on the hair’s porosity which measures how the hair receives and retains moisture.

Low Porosity
The hair cuticles will lay closely and tightly together, making it difficult to absorb moisture. For low porosity hair types, you’ll want to open up the tight cuticles to let moisture in: cleanse, condition and use a mask weekly and apply cream and gel multiple times throughout the week.

Medium Porosity
This hair type can take moisture in naturally and can hold a style for a long time. For medium porosity hair types, it’s key to close the hair cuticles to lock in the moisture: cleanse and condition weekly and apply cream or gel when the hair is feeling dry.

High Porosity
This hair type typically takes in moisture quickly; however, it can lose it just as fast! For high porosity hair types, it’s important to seal the hair shaft to lock in moisture: shampoo and condition weekly and use a mask once or twice a month.

Curly hair goals

In a nutshell, we can note that curly hair is prone to dryness and frizz, but the reality is that every client will have a unique requirement and their own personal hair care journey. To improve moisture, you’ll likely want to create a full curly or wavy hair care routine; for enhanced curl definition, blending a nourishing mask with gentle hair styling products will work wonders; or to fight frizz, try a conditioning co-wash cleanser coupled with a moisturising styling cream.

Personalised routines

We’ll say it until we’re blue in the face: every curl is different! So even when you’ve diagnosed the curl type, hair condition, and client goals, you’ll still want to create a bespoke regime. We know a bit of guidance won’t go amiss, so here are OSMO’s suggestions of how you could combine the Curl Revival hair care products for each curl type.

Top curl care tips:

  • Advise clients to only wash their hair 1-2 times per week and make sure they use a sulphate-free shampoo for curly hair to avoid damage.
  • If clients are particularly prone to frizz, tell them to avoid brushing hair when it’s dry and to use a micro-fibre towel during drying to squeeze out excess water.
  • Try wrapping hair in a silk scarf or sleep on a silk pillowcase at bed time to protect hair from frizz, tangles, and matting.
  • Suffering from crunchy curls after applying hair gel? This is called a ‘cast’ and can be avoided by scrunching curls up to soften and improve bounce.

Remember that curl care is completely personal, so may need to be tweaked over time. It’s all about trial and error, but with products you know will be kind to your clients’ curls.

Curly hair dos and don’ts

DON’T over-wash the hair. Shampooing too often washes out the natural oils that curly hair needs to stay defined and can make hair brittle.

DO condition. A nourishing, silicone-free conditioner is a curl’s best friend. Keeping curls moisturised is key to preventing frizz and dehydration.

DON’T brush or comb hair when it’s completely dry as this can lead to extreme frizz.

DO gently detangle curls using a wide-tooth comb or detangling hair brush made specifically for curly hair.

DON’T use heat stylers frequently. Reduce the use of hair dryers, straighteners and tongs to avoid drying out the hair. Too much heat styling can make curls and coils brittle and weak, and can alter the hair’s natural curl pattern.

DO air dry as much as possible. Use a micro-fibre towel to squeeze out excess water and allow hair to air dry naturally. This will avoid disturbing the curl pattern while eliminating the harsh effects of blow-drying.
